a5c7b9f00b LAPD sergeant Roger Murtaugh, his partner, sergeant Martin Riggs, and their friend Leo Getz, who is now a private investigator, are out on Murtaugh's boat, fishing in the Los Angeles Harbor, when they are sideswiped by a huge freighter. After a wild gunfight against a group of Chinese men who were on the freighter, it is discovered that the freighter is full of illegal Chinese immigrants. As Murtaugh sulks over what is left of his now sunken yacht, he discovers a hidden Chinese immigrant family and their patriarch, Mr. Hong, and decides to take them in. At the police station, Detective Ng expresses his belief that Chinatown crime boss Benny "Uncle Benny" Chan is behind the smuggling. Sergeant Lorna Cole of the Internal Affairs Division is unable to help out on the case because she is pregnant with Riggs's baby, and Murtaugh's daughter Rianne is also pregnant. Helping Riggs, Murtaugh, and Leo on the case is Sergeant Lee Butters, the father of Rianne's baby. Wah Sing Ku, a leader in the Chinese Triads, is angry about the disappearance of the Hong family, the family Murtaugh took in, and Wah Sing Ku and the triads are the most dangerous enemies that Riggs and Murtaugh will ever face together. Wah Sing Ku and his men show up at the Murtaugh house, take the Hongs, and set the house on fire with Riggs, Lorna, Murtaugh, Rianne, Murtaugh's wife Trish, Murtaugh's other daughter Carrie, and his son Nick inside. Unknown to Wah Sing Ku, little Ping, the youngest member of the Hong family, was left behind in the house. Ping frees Riggs, who frees the others. Later, when Riggs, Murtaugh, Butters, and Lorna discover that Wah Sing Ku has killed Mr. Hong, Mr. Hong's uncle, and Uncle Benny Chan, Roger takes it very personally because Hong and Hong's uncle were killed. With personal crises and age weighing in on them, LAPD officers Riggs and Murtaugh must contend with deadly Chinese triads that are trying to free their former leaders out of prison and onto American soil. LETHAL WEAPON 4 is a crowd-pleasing final instalment of the long-running franchise, one with a Chinese twist that gives it freshness and momentum. This time around, Riggs and Murtaugh are on the trail of a murderous Triad organisation, and all of the regular players come back. I saw this on release at the cinema and really enjoyed it; Gibson and Glover successfully recapture the old magic and Jet Li is simply phenomenal as the best villain of the series. It certainly improves on the forgettable LETHAL WEAPON 3.

I will make this clear, though: LETHAL WEAPON 4 isn't a perfect film. The script is sub-par at times and Chris Rock's shtick soon wears thin. Joe Pesci and Danny Glover are reliably good, but Gibson's character is a bit off and obnoxious at times. Rene Russo also has too much screen time with a one-note gag and that never-ending ending threatens to reach RETURN OF THE KING levels of cheesiness at times. However, the plot is solid and the action scenes are quite remarkable, the inventive freeway chase giving Gibson's stand-in some proper stunts to work with. Li is kept in the background but shines in his fight scenes, and that dockside brawl at the climax is a real zinger. Yes everybody, the gang's back in action! Martin Riggs (Mel Gibson), and Roger Murtaugh (Danny Glover) have returned, and this time, they will need a helping hand...

Riggs and Murtaugh team up once again to bring us the fourth entry in the immensely successful LETHAL WEAPON series, LETHAL WEAPON 4. Lots of action, gunfire, huge explosions, wild stunts, general kinetic energy, cool shoot-outs, awestruck martial arts, and total chaos accompany this movie into full blast...sort of. Lethal Weapon 4, though earnestly tried by both the cast members and the production crew, misses the mark...

Director Richard Donner (LETHAL WEAPON 1, 2, and 3) returns to the series as well as the two veteran leading actors. Rene Russo is back as Riggs' pregnant love interest, and Joe Pesci gives us plenty of laughs too as a funny Private Investigator, Leo Getz. A new addition to the LETHAL WEAPON cast is Chris Rock, who was hilarious as Detective Lee Butters. He has tons of laugh out loud moments, and coincidentially, he was the one responsible for getting Murtaugh's daughter pregnant...

Martial Arts sensation Jet Li makes his U.S. debut here in LETHAL WEAPON 4 as Wah Sing Ku a nasty villian with a style, and a penchant for beating up the competition. Li is the show stealer for this movie. He displays many patented, slick, and rigorous lightning quick moves and speed. He is tough, graceful, and a nearly impossible villian to beat. Li also does a fine job creating a malicious edge as well too, using a necklace full of beads as a potent weapon...

Looks like a reunion here, folks! Riggs and Murtaugh are up to their necks as they attempt to crack an illegal immigrant smuggling ring. This ring of terror is lead by, who else, supervillian Jet Li, and his assistant, Uncle Benny (Kim Chan). The two idiotic cops have managed to provoke the anger of both Li and his Triads, and now, the buddies are on the organized gang's hit list...marked for death...

LETHAL WEAPON 4 is pure firepower with lots of hilarity, but this film needs lots of target practice. The cast plays for laughs in this film as well. One scene that was also a spotlight grabbing opportunity was when both Chris Rock and Joe Pesci were arguing (and improvising) to one another about how cellphones are useless and annoying and they skyrocket your phone bill and such. That scene was a defining moment in this movie. Chris Rock deserves accomendation for being a funny, wisecracking comedian who has a disputable attitude. Like Jet Li, Rock stole the show from the two leading characters.

The action is LETHAL WEAPON 4 is furious...if sparse. Although the action sequences in this motion picture are sedulously choreographed, most of the good scenes have already been shown in the trailers. You know that that's a desperate attempt for money and attention. The explosive beginning of LETHAL WEAPON 4 wasn't bad...in fact, it was terrific. Still, the exploding gas truck and lots of inferno in this introduction was all too full blown...and predictable. The car chase scene at the freeway, where the car Riggs and Murtaugh were driving crashed through an entire building literally was also fun...but I already anticipated that. The marathon at Chinatown was kind of presentimented too much also...

LETHAL WEAPON 4 is obviously losing its magic. Why? For starters, here are several pathetic attempts at eliciting laughs.

1) Danny Glover resorts to running around in his boxers just to get a bad guy's attention. 2) Danny Glover (Murtaugh) thinks that Chris Rock is getting "close" to him because this young neophyte is acting officious in front of this captain. 3) Mel Gibson using stereotypical remarks on Chinese and Asian Americans just to get some "answers." (i.e. "Flied lice.") 4) The Lethal Weapon gang plus Uncle Benny must use laughing gas in order to interrogate Benny. Benny though, shined too with some of his witty dialogue. 5) Riggs no longer retains his suicidal tendencies; instead he tries to attract laughs with his silliness on how to become a "daddy."

LETHAL WEAPON 4 should exit the curtain right now while its reputation is still running high. Sure, the action is overwhelming in this flick, but all the excitement was already drained with all those overhyped, wasteful trailers. This film has one too many boring dialogue, inane comedy (for the most part), and a mean-spirited attitude towards Asian Americans. Only one redeeming factor saved this film from being sent to the compost heap: Jet Li. He's one of the most aplomb, confident martial artists around; too bad he couldn't have played the hero. Riggs and Murtaugh are getting too old for this...

RATING: ** out of ****. The quintessence of the buddy cop pic, "LW4" is big on action, playful banter and just enough plot to keep our attention from wandering. While bemoaning the fact that they're getting old, LAPD detectives Martin Riggs (Mel Gibson) and Roger Murtaugh (Danny Glover) pair with rookie detective Lee Butters (Chris Rock) to investigate a Chinese smuggling ring led by Chinatown crime boss "Uncle Benny" Chan (Kim Chan) who has been smuggling in illegal Chinese slaves and counterfeiting Chinese currency. Meanwhile, Riggs' girlfriend Lorna Cole (Rene Russo) and Murtaugh's unmarried daughter Rianne (Traci Wolfe) are pregnant, and Leo Getz (Joe Pesci) is back, now working as a private investigator. The Four Fathers—Michael Sing Ku (Conan Lee), James Wing Chow (James Wing Woo), Li Lum Chung (François Chau), and (Raymond Moy), whom Riggs and Murtaugh mistake as "forefathers", are the four heads of the Triad, a Chinese syndicate that once ran organized crime in Hong Kong. Detective Ing Ny (Calvin Jung) explains that, when the Reds took over Hong Kong, they imprisoned the Four Fathers. The Triad, currently operating out of Chinatown in Los Angeles and headed by Uncle Benny and the ruthless Wah Sing Ku (Jet Li), is attempting to "buy back" the Four Fathers from a corrupt Chinese General (Dana Lee) who snuck the Four Fathers out of jail and had them shipped to America in return for payment. The most obvious reason could be that it was to show that Riggs was getting older. Also this film was known to have been fast-tracked from pre-production to final release: filming began in January 1998 for a summer 1998 release and so it could be that Mel Gibson just didn't have time to grow his hair back. Also, in Lethal Weapon 3, everyone was ragging on him to get a haircut as it was the '90s. So it's likely he just finally caved and decided to get with the times. Murtaugh explains to Riggs during the final shootout in the harbor warehouse; that Ebony Clark, the author of the "cheesy sex" novel that Lorna was reading earlier in the movie, is actually Trish. Riggs and Leo make it to the hospital to find Lorna writhing on a gurney and about to give birth but refusing to do so until she and Riggs can be married. Riggs says okay, so Leo runs off to find a minister, priest, or anyone who can marry them. As the nurses wheel Lorna into the delivery suite, Leo returns with Rabbi Gelb (Richard Libertini), who quickly pronounces them "man and wife." Having been raised Jewish, Leo grabs a urine cup from a nearby patient, dumps the urine in the sink, covers the cup with a towel, and makes Riggs step on it to complete the ceremony in the traditional fashion. Lorna is then wheeled into the delivery room. Riggs follows after giving Leo a big hug. Later, Riggs goes down to the nursery to view his new son and is joined by Murtaugh and Butters viewing their new baby girl. Leo buys a camera from a nearby vending machine, and Captain Murphy (Steve Kahan) arrives with presents for the new mothers, restores Riggs and Murtaugh to their Sergeant status, and tells them that the Hong family has been given asylum. In the final scene, Leo gets a doctor to take a photo of the entire Riggs-Murtaugh "family". The 15-rated UK versions of this movie are heavily censored, and there is no 18-rated variant. Especially the fighting sequences were trimmed extremely and nearly 90 seconds are missing and 33 scenes were altered.
